FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: My child has never done any kind of karate before, are they still able to join a class?

A: Of course. Anyone of any skill level is welcome to join our sessions. Classes cater to different age groups and experience levels. If you have any questions about which class is best suited for you or your child, reach out to us.

Q: How do I pay for classes?

A: You can pay online through a monthly membership or a one-time class pass (see our Membership page for more information). We also accept cash on-site.

Q: How do karate belts work? When will I get one?

A: Students are assessed at incremental "gradings," where they are given the opportunity to advance to the next belt. Time required between belts is judged by the Sensei. If you are a regular attendee of class, and show improvement toward the required knowledge of a higher rank, then you will be invited to grade for your next belt.

Q: What should I/my child wear to karate classes with UAK?

A: For the first few weeks, you are welcome to wear athletic wear of any kind to class. After that point, it is recommended that you get at least one karate Gi (uniform) for class.

Q: Where do I get a karate Gi?

A: If interested, you can purchase karate Gi's directly from us! We've sourced high quality Gi's with the UAK logo, which are available in children and teen/adult sizes. Visit our Shop page for more information.

Q: What about sparring gloves and pads, do I need those for class?

A: We'll provide the gloves and pads you need during class, but having your own can be helpful for independent training or competitions down the line. If you're interested in your own equipment, check out our Shop page, where we have sparring gloves and pads for sale.
